13 Sep Ladies, leave the chokers at home!

Chokers: Easily one of the most popular accessories worn by fashionistas around the globe. You may have thought they died along with the 90s, but they’ve come back with a vengeance. From celebrities and runways, to fast fashion and department stores, these necklaces have been adopted by the masses. But like any huge trend the overuse and down right obsession with chokers has reached an all time high. From teens to young adults these simple necklaces are just slapped on with any outfit, leading girls to think of themselves as trendy, stylish and worst of all automatically “good looking” or “looking hot” just because they’re wearing one.

Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid and many other celebrities may be rocking the trend with everything they own but that doesn’t mean the masses should follow suit. They have stylists that carefully choose the right colour, layering pieces and necklines for each outfit we see them in. The problem is, the female population forgets this. They just see these celebrities are wearing them, grab the first choker they find and put it on with everything. And when I say everything, I truly mean from ball gowns to bathing suits, this trend has no boundaries. Why do women feel the need to wear these necklaces, especially the simple straight black ones, with every single outfit

At this point it’s like someone needs to write a “how to wear chokers for dummies” book with the main point being, they do not automatically make your outfit stylish!

Now, I’m not saying I’m against chokers completely, I actually think the right choker, with the right styling and for an appropriate occasion, they can be a quite flattering accent to a women’s outfit. And I am of course all for women wearing what they want, when they want and expressing themselves through fashion. This, however isn’t about deterring someone from wearing chokers but rather to get them to understand that not every outfit needs one. It’s a statement that can be made for every trend really, just because something is deemed fashionable, doesn’t mean that once you’ve put it on, you automatically look amazing! I truly wish I could shake some of these fashion followers when I see them wearing the classic black choker with fancy wedding outfits or out to brunch in sweats. What women need to really understand is that these necklaces are meant to be accent pieces in an overall outfit, that the necklace is a finishing touch, not a saving grace.

So my final plea to the masses is just remember that trends don’t make you stylish, its how you rock them that does. Remember that there is a time, place, colour, neckline and style for every choker and sometimes its best to just leave them at home!
