16 Oct Am I Cliché?

We all know her, that cliché girl who tries too hard and, despite all the whispering behind her back, nobody ever calls her out. She isn’t doing it because she wants to, she isn’t doing it because she has to, it’s just who she is. Or, at least, it is who society makes her feel she has to be.

I am that girl.

I have read all the books written by strong women about strong women, listened to all the podcasts, and I think of myself as a modern-day woman. Yet, despite my feminist views, and my “I do what I want” attitude, I still find myself checking every box when it comes to being cliché.

Here’s the thing: it’s okay to be that girl.

The thing about clichés is that they are unapologetic for who they are. Yes, they try too hard. Yes, they are often stereotypical. But, the thing is, they don’t give a damn.

Listen, this might just be my attempt at self-validation for all the crazy shit I do, but I have gotten to the point where I can’t deny it anymore. I am a 20-year-old girl who eats her feelings, has an attitude problem, and desperately wants a boyfriend.

Was any of this a secret? No. So, where is the harm is admitting it?

Now, this isn’t all coming from me. I walk outside and am constantly slapped in the face with happy couples, and skinny celebrities, and getting told that I am saucy or rude. But, the funny thing is, I stopped caring a long time ago. I could completely change myself; stop looking for love in all the wrong places, go for a run, eat kale, but if I did that I would just be a different kind of unhappy.

I have a lot of amazing things going for me and, until the day comes when I can finally take over the world, I am okay with having a few stereotypical flaws.

Embrace your cliché.
