Why I Love Fashion

By: Emily Blair

Ever since I can remember I have been interested in Fashion. From flipping through my mom’s Vogue as a child to helping friends style outfits, to spending hours making the perfect Halloween costume I have always loved incorporating my creative energy into fashion.  I have early memories of watching Jeanne Beker on Fashion Television and being so intrigued about the runway as well as behind the scenes chaos. In fact, I recently found my grade five year book, under my picture there was a quote saying “I want to be a fashion designer when I grow up.”

Now, years later I still have that same passion for fashion and as I gain a deeper understanding about the sectors of the industry my grade five dreams seem to be put in perspective. What interests me about a career in the fashion industry is how diverse it is. As someone who is a kinesthetic learner and likes performing practical skills, I am very attracted to the fast paced, hands on aspect. I also appreciate that it will never die or go out of style if you will. People will always need clothes. The diversification is what really drives me toward the fashion industry, being it marketing, design, manufacturing, travel, photography, cultural or historic inspired garments, sustainable fashion, high end fashion and constant evolving trends. Also recently being very intrigued about how gender fluidity, social media and the millennial generation impacts the industry. I like that fashion is always evolving and can take you all over the world.

Sophia Amoruso the founder and CEO of the brand Nasty Gal has been a huge inspiration for me. In her book #GirlBoss she talks about taking her interest in photography, vintage clothing and understanding her customer into starting an online store that has turned to a multi-million dollar business. I respect that she took the little means she had a turned it into something. Now she uses her status to empower people, especially girls on how to get their start in the fashion world through her books as well as opportunities through her foundation “#girlbossfoundation”, which offers female creatives funding.

In starting my fashion career, I envision myself working on many projects. I hope to style, take pictures and promote brands that I am passionate about. Eventually, having my own label that is fashionable and sustainable that supports free trade. I have been traveling for the past two years and was so captivated by how different cultures, history and weather conditions influence what people wear. I see my brand being beautiful and practical that appeals to all walks of life. I plan on marketing it in a modern way that is inclusive to a wide range of people. My work ethic and eye for detail gives me the drive to peruse my dreams. My goal driven personality will allow me to see the bigger picture and know that my vision coming to life will be incredibly rewarding.
