14 Sep Princess Nokia – Too much exposure?

Rap artist, Destiny Frasqueri or known as Princess Nokia, is known for her feminist culture expressed in her music. Princess Nokia knows herself and knows her audience; she is empowered by her complexity and releases that energy to motivate young girls to find and express themselves.

When I met up with my two guy friends, we watched her latest music video called “G.O.A.T”. In the video she is wearing a Moschino jacket with a bathing suit top, paired with boyfriend jeans, as she raps she feels herself seductively as her hand glides down to her crouch. Both of my friends reaction were not impressed and thought she was doing it for attention. I completely disagree. Maybe because I am bias since I am a huge fan, but I know she only did that because she genuinely feels confident with herself.

Part of Princess Nokia brand is to live the life you want without anyone else’s judgement and she clearly shows that in the music video. She doesn’t care what others have to say about her, especially men because she knows who she is and she’s not going to change herself for anyone. I think it’s empowering, seeing a young women of colour with that much confidence amazes me.

Yes, Princess Nokia stunts on stage and flaunts her body, but that gives men no right to over sexualize or judge her for what she performs. As an artist, she is inclined to express herself in any way shape or form. As a women – a women of colour in fact, it’s hard to find acceptance in society where all we see is Kendall and Kylie as influences.

Princess Nokia brings a refreshing talent to the music platform by inspiring women of colour to be more confident with themselves and to live the life they want to without the influence of anyone else. Princess Nokia knows herself and knows her market, she isn’t afraid to change her ideas or belief for anyone else, she is her own original brand and no one can change that.
