04 Dec My Hero

Her husband abandoned her the moment he found out she was pregnant.

At the age of 29, she had to move back in with her parents.

Her child was born sick, spending her first 6 weeks in intensive care.

She moved them to Newfoundland, and worked constantly.

Her shift work kept her away most days and nights.

She would race home between shifts for 10 minutes with her daughter.

She saw terrifying things on the job, but kept a smile on her face.

She wouldn’t show anyone how lonely she was.

She found somebody to love, who she thought would love her forever.

She let him into their lives, and suddenly they had a family.

She thought it would last forever.

Flash forward 13 years.

She is lonely, and her daughter is old enough to see it.

Her daughter vows to never let her feel that way again.

They stay together, to keep from being alone.

She finds a man that will love her forever.

Her daughter doesn’t believe him.

She refuses to acknowledge when he is even in the room.

He works everyday to gain her trust.

He does everything right.

He respects her mother, he respects her.

She believes him.

They are a family.

They are still a family.

She is my mother.

She is my hero.

The thing is, regardless of how many times I tell somebody how proud I am of her, or how blessed I am, they will never know. No matter how many times I tell her that she is the reason I am the woman I am today, she will never know how much I mean it. No matter how many times I tell him that I am grateful he came along, and taught me what a good man looks like, he will always be trying to prove himself.
