10 Dec What It’s Really Like Going Away For University

So the current situation here is I’m in my fifth term of college, studying Marketing for Fashion and Entertainment, with one more term to get through before I graduate (WOO!). Before starting at this school in 2016 though, I went to Queen’s University and lived in Kingston for a year. Why you may ask? Well I’m not totally sure to be honest. I needed to pick a top school for when I finished high school, it was a reputable university, my sister went there already, and best of all, it was away from home. I wanted that typical university experience of partying all long weekend of course. And let me tell you, I got the experience all right. I was only 17 years old when I actually started school there, but not unlike most first years, I had a fake ID. (Shout out to my older sister who looks identical to me, oh and uh, sorry mom!) I made a few friends quickly, and they ended up being my close group of friends for the rest of the year. We went out every. single. weekend. But wait, it gets more intense. When one of the other girls actually turned 19, her and I started going to the bigger club which mean

s we went out more each weekend. What started out as every Thursday night out, turned into a full blown every weekend, all weekend out. Thursdays, Fridays, AND Saturdays. To be completely honest with you guys, I drank like a tank and to this day I’m not sure how my liver didn’t die while I was living out there. Freshman 15 is also real. Very real. The meal plan and food options are endless and open till all hours of the night, one of which was in the residence building I lived in so yay me. 90% of the money I spent while living on residence was definitely put towards alcohol… probably not my smartest move but here we are, right? Anyway, ever since moving home last year, I don’t go out nearly as often and my alcohol tolerance has gone down substantially since then.

Going away for school was definitely an experience I don’t regret. I think I needed to do it so I would know what it was like first hand and not feel like I’m missing out on any of the fun. It was one hell of a year filled with excitement, new relationships, fun times and drama. One year was enough for me, but I would do it again if I had the chance, but maybe differently the second time around.
