21 Mar Spring 2018 Trend: Athletic Gear
The Athleisure trend has exploded due to an Instagram-led cult around healthy living and “clean eating”, which has spurred hundreds of thousands “athleisure” posts of so-called “yoga bunnies” posing in workout gear, clutching green juices. Many work out clothing companies have taken this their advantage and started to use these instagrammers to showcase their latest collections. Also many women’s clothing companies have started designing athleisure and show no signs of slowing down as they are determined to get their piece of the money pie. Why not? everyone is!
The phrase “athleisure” was first used in 70’s on an adverts for trainers but its sudden rise saw the word officially enter the US Merriam Webster dictionary in April 2016, defined as “casual clothing to be worn for exercising and for general use”.
For spring 2018, designers revved up their collections with sporty designs, referencing tracksuits, racing gear and team logos, polo shirts, parkas, gym shorts and retro sneakers. Performance athletic gear collided with fierce fashion on the runways, resulting in a cool mix of style meets function.

From the slinky mesh slips to tracksuits, athletic-inspired clothes won fashion month. But this isn’t your usual athleisure, mind you. Come spring, we’re seeing a modern update with streamlined and sexy sporty designs. The jumpsuits at Dior, Fenty X Puma and Marc Jacobs recalled scuba diving, motocross and skiing suits. For summer, rather than going out in your workout clothes, be more creative and mix and match them with the less sporty items in your closet!
Wear your Addidas tracksuit with a trenchcoat for a sporty classy look or go for a preppy polo shirt and pleated mini skirt.
