We see these trends on Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and on celebrities. They look like the latest, greatest thing in the universe. But are they everything they’re cracked up to be?
Waist trainer
Expectations
Celebrities wear it, promote it, say this is the reason for their hourglass figure but, is it true?
Buying the waist trainer we expect to have the curves of a Kardashian/Jenner in less than a month. It claims to tone and flatten your abs while you workout at the gym; the ‘’corset” is supposed to increase the heat of the body so it will burn more calories. It’s also supposed to help improve your posture. You can buy them online, priced from $35 and up.
Reality
I have bought a waist trainer to see if what the reviews said were true. I bought mine in a small Montreal store. The sales associate made me try various models and sizes to see which one fit me best. I spent $100 on my waist trainer. I tried it on a regular day and found it extremely tight. Who needs to breathe, right? But after a few minutes I got used to it and was able to function normally—well, mostly. I couldn’t slouch anymore. It immediately straightened my back. During my cardio, I felt my core sweating and burning my fat faster than ever before. After a month, wearing it six days a week, five hours a day (half that time while I was in the gym), I lost two inches around my waist.
Sticky Bra
Expectations
We have heard of it, we’ve seen it, but does it work? The latest strapless, backless sticky bra is all over social media and one of the accessories to have this year. By tightening the cords in the centre of the bra, the “Perfect Sculpt Bra” is supposed to enhance women’s breasts by tightening cords to create a bigger cleavage. It promises to provide support no matter what cup size you wear.
Reality
When it went viral on Instagram, I decided to get it. After a month of waiting I finally got my ‘’perfect sculpt bra’’ for US$30 (plus shipping). I ordered it in an A cup for my friend and a D cup for me. My friend’s cleavage immediately improved. It looked like she went up a cup size. In my case, the bra pushed my breasts together, but it didn’t provide support, and after an hour the cords loosened and I had no support and no extra cleavage.
Diva Cup
Expectations
Unlike other celebrity trends, the diva cup is more under cover. The Diva Cup is an option to tampons and pads. According to the package, you can wear it up to 12 hours with no leakage. And, you can wear it for any activity, even the gym.
Reality
When I tried the Diva Cup, it accomplished everything it promised, with almost no complications. Because it’s a silicone cup, it’s comfortable and feels like you’re wearing nothing. Removal is easy, too—unless, like me, you have claws for nails. It’s only $34.99, but it’s reusable and you will never have to buy a tampon again. (Despite having no problems with leakage, if I had a heavier flow, I’d wear a pad for security.) Bonus, it’s made in Canada.
